B4.4. Session Overview - A plan for the management of OUD: Non-Opioid Treatments

This session will review different types of pain, pharmacologic management of pain and non-pharmacologic management of pain, and osteopathic principles and practices. This session includes a demonstration of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) to treat pain. Finally, this session includes an online video that addresses the Obama Administration’s request for medical schools to require prescriber education in line with the CDC guidelines to address the opioid crisis.

Instructional Strategy: Lecture, Online video, 2 hours

Learning Objectives

  1. List the non-opioid medications, restorative therapies, interventional procedures, behavioral health approaches, complementary and integrative health approaches for pain management. 

  2. Apply information to select the most appropriate non-opioid treatment for an individual with pain via a risk assessment.
