A7. Session Overview - Non-opioid pain treatments

This session will review different types of non-opioid treatments for pain. In addition, this session includes cases that require students to select the most appropriate non-opioid treatment for a patient with pain. Finally, this session includes an online video that addresses the Obama Administration’s request for medical schools to require prescriber education in line with the CDC guidelines to address the opioid crisis.

Instructional Strategy: Lecture/Online video, 2 hours

Learning Objectives

  1. List the non-opioid medications, restorative therapies, interventional procedures, behavioral health approaches, complementary and integrative health approaches for pain management. 
  2. Apply information to select the most appropriate non-opioid treatment for an individual with pain via a risk assessment.
