Reference Librarian

NEOMED Library welcomes information professionals from all backgrounds to apply for the open full-time Reference Librarian position at our Rootstown, Ohio location..

  • SUMMARY: The position provides reference service, bibliographic research assistance and instruction, and information literacy education to the campus community. Position is also responsible for the implementation and management of the NEOMED scholarly communications initiative, including copyright instruction and support.

  • PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provides general reference service to all library patrons. Develops and implements an Information Literacy Program, by providing consultations and targeted reference services that support research and teaching efforts throughout the university. Maintains statistics and produces reports and assessments of reference activity.

    • Educates students, faculty, and staff in information literacy and bibliographic research methods. Supports this activity by providing stand-alone instruction, and by developing tutorials, literature reviews, Library Guides, instructional web pages, and other appropriate instructional materials.

    • Performs as a research and education librarian. Keeps abreast of developments in scholarly communications, in the scholarly publishing industry, and in the campus scholarly communications environment. Maintains statistics and produces reports and assessments of instructional activity.

    • Provides copyright instruction, literature review and support for the University. Works with General Counsel to support university copyright policy. Maintains statistics and produces reports and assessments of copyright activity.

    • Participates in general professional activities including planning, internship supervision, and representing the library in consortium and professional venues. Acts as liaison to cultivate relationships across university entities particularly, with respect to Library Guides. Participates in scholarly activities and professional development.

    • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Education/Degrees:

      • Minimum of Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school.

    • Experience:

      • Minimum of two years of professional experience in an academic research library, or equivalent experience.

      • One year of professional library experience in a health sciences library, or experience serving a similar patron population. Knowledge of health sciences information resources, especially PubMed and EBM resources.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Experience:

      • Teaching experience preferred.

    • Education:
      • Undergraduate or graduate degree in a life science, medical, or allied health field preferred

Cataloger Librarian

NEOMED Library welcomes information professionals from all backgrounds to apply for the open part-time Cataloger Librarian position at our Rootstown, Ohio location.

  • SUMMARY: Performs professional cataloging services for the NEOMED library and affiliated hospital libraries. Work is on a part-time basis, averaging 29 hours per week.

  • PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Performs original and copy cataloging for print, non-print & digital items for the NEOMED Library and affiliated hospital libraries. Contribute records to NeoLINK, OhioLINK Central, and OCLC

    • Edit and load cataloging records provided by OhioLINK and external vendors. Contribute records to NeoLINK, OhioLINK Central, and OCLC

    • Collaborates with the Northeast Ohio Regional Depository on material transfers and other cataloging related projects

    • Primary point of contact for evaluating physical material donations. Works collaboratively with the Electronic Resource Librarian on overall collection assessment

    • Perform database maintenance to continuously maintain, improve, and correct cataloging records in NeoLINK and OCLC

    • Documents cataloging and technical services policies, procedures, and statistics as needed

    • Maintain serials holdings in NeoLINK, OCLC, and related library automation systems

    • Produce non-MARC metadata for university archival digital projects

    • Perform other duties as assigned
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Education/Degrees:

      • Master’s degree in library science (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution. Note: candidates who anticipate completing their degree within three months after their initial date of hire are encouraged to apply.

    • Experience:

      • Minimum of two years of professional experience in an academic research library, or equivalent experience.

      • One year of professional library experience in a health sciences library, or experience serving a similar patron population. Knowledge of health sciences information resources, especially PubMed and EBM resources.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Experience:

      • Two years of academic library experience preferred.

      • Experience working as a cataloger in an academic library, experience using standard cataloging tools such as OCLC Connexion, Classification Web, and RDA Toolkit.

      • Experience with cataloging on an integrated library system with the Sierra ILS preferred

  • KEY SKILLS:
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience applying cataloging standards and practices, such as RDA, AACR2, MARC 21 format, LC and NLM Classification, LCSH and MeSH, authority control, etc. Ability to implement new cataloging standards and/or procedures.

    • Knowledge and experience with batch processing MARC records including batch loading and/or batch editing using MarcEdit, Sierra ILS, and other import tools.

    • Knowledge and experience cataloging with Dublin Core or other non-MARC metadata schema preferred.

    • Understanding of emerging trends in cataloging, technical services, and academic libraries

    • Understanding and awareness of end-user experience and needs in relation to catalog records and cataloging procedures
