Horatio Alger and Wheels of Misfortune exerciseThe Horatio Alger Activity physically and visually illustrates the often invisible presence of oppression and privilege in our lives. The activity is used to demonstrate differences within a group that otherwise have a common characteristic (ie health professionals, medical students, etc). Using statements from the Horatio Alger Activity (provided by instructors), a Population Health Application Exercise and discussion follows to examine how social determinants, oppression and privilege lead to health disparities. |

Introduction to Narrative MedicineThis session introduces the concept of Narrative Medicine, as historically situated in American society (engel et al, 2008). The Narrative Competence Approach is defined, features of narratives, and Narrative Skill Sets to practice during the session. These are foundational to build on in future sessions. Case narratives are used to practice the Narrative Approach and Narrative Skill Sets, while examining the presence of health and health care disparities in case narratives. |

Gaps in CareThis session discusses social determinants of health and how they relate to gaps in care of individuals, aggregates and populations. The content focuses on recognition of social determinants of health through sharing narratives. Participants will be introduced to a Social Determinants of Health Framework. |
