Evidence based medicine (EBM) is a longitudinal thread that runs through the College of Medicine curriculum. EBM content is found within multiple courses in the curriculum. This guide is focused on illustrating where EBM content is found in the curriculum and provide educational support to some EBM class sessions and assessments.

HSC I:

• Use an evidence-based medicine approach to answer clinical questions by identifying and evaluating relevant online and print information (primary literature, reference books, databases, journal articles, etc.).
• Describe how clinical research design and common statistical tests used in these studies: meta-analyses, systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, case-control studies, cohort studies, descriptive studies, and qualitative studies affect the evaluation of literature.
• Evaluate the clinical literature to estimate the probability of drugs and treatments benefiting or harming patient populations.

HSC II:

• Use an evidence-based medicine approach to answer clinical questions by identifying and evaluating relevant online and print information and presenting evidence-based responses to healthcare professionals and patients

• Describe how clinical research design and common statistical tests used in meta-analyses and systematic reviews

• Discuss patient education resources and search for resources appropriate that could be utilized in one of your clinical sites.

• Understand the principles of information mastery and how it can be implemented into clinical practice

The Learning Center has hired a part-time ESL tutor from Kent State University’s Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) graduate program. This tutor, Amanda Balch, will collaborate with Learning Center staff, and faculty from both the COM and COP to offer one-on-one meetings to address students’ concerns with writing, communication, public speaking, field-specific vocabulary, and more.

Sessions will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the academic year.

• You can sign up for a 30 minute session with Amanda, one-on-one, from 4:00-8:00 pm, while additional availability from 12-4 PM may become available as well. All sessions, including their specific location, are currently available for you to view and sign-up in AIMS.
