Guide Overview

This guide is focused on the evidence based medicine (EBM) class sessions within the Health Systems and Community (HSC) III & IV courses in the M2 year.

HSC IIII & IV EBM-related Course Objectives

HSC III:

  • Use an evidence-based medicine approach to answer clinical questions by identifying and evaluating relevant online and print information (primary literature, reference books, databases, journal articles, etc.).
  • Describe how clinical research design and common statistical tests used in these studies: meta-analyses, systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, case-control studies, cohort studies, descriptive studies, and qualitative studies affect the evaluation of literature.
  • Evaluate the clinical literature to estimate the probability of drugs and treatments benefiting or harming patient populations.

HSC IV:

  • Use statistics to answer clinical questions and prepare for the USMLE Step 1 exam.
  • Critique and analyze clinical literature to estimate the probability of drugs and treatments benefiting or harming patient populations.
  • Understand and describe complexities and deficiencies when critiquing medical literature
