If You Are a New PubMed User, Watch the Tutorials Prior to Class

You will use PubMed all four years of the medicine curriculum. You need to be able to quickly and effectively use it to find relevant articles for assignments.

  • By the end of the in person session, M1 students need to be able to:
    • Search PubMed by:
      • author
      • keywords
      • using Boolean operators
      • PubMed ID
      • MeSH (medical subject headings)
    • Use filters to make your search results more specific
      • Including restricting by:
        • article type
        • restrict by publication date
        • species
        • age
    • Be able to access online articles via the NEOMED library
    • Be signed up for ILLiad (Library's interlibrary loan service)
    • Know how My NCBI can help you save and share your search results
    • Cite an article using PubMed's citation tool
    • Understand what are retractions and why retracted articles should not be used by clinicians.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

AT THE END OF THE PRE-CLASS LECTURE VIDEO AND LIVE ADVANCED TRAINING SESSION, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Demonstrate PubMed searches using authors, keywords, Boolean operators, Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), PubMed ID, and filters.

  • Use P-PICO to create a clinical question based upon a clinical case discussed in class.

  • Search PubMed and find relevant research and review articles that could answer your clinical question.

  • Practice accessing online articles and citing articles, and sign-up for ILLiad (library’s Inter-Library Loan service).

  • Search for and distinguish between research and review articles.

  • Describe the types of clinical questions and which are the preferred study designs for research articles
