HSC II: IPE Reflection Assessment

HSC II: IPE Reflection Assessment

The College of Medicine’s guiding principles for its curriculum and focus on student competency-based outcomes, each student is required to complete two self-assessment tools that examine self-efficacy in interprofessional collaborative competency at the end of the semester.  Both are formative and will be completed again in the M2 academic year.  These assessment tools are intended to contribute towards demonstration of growth and competence over time.

1. Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey (ICCAS).  © MacDonald, Archibald, Trumpower, Jelley, Cragg, Casimiro, & Johnstone, 2009.

Students are asked to rate themselves on a list of items using a retrospective pre-post approach, comparing their knowledge, skills and abilities in the present time (end of the Spring semester) compared to the beginning of the semester.

The ICCAS was designed to assess the change in interprofessional collaboration-related competencies in healthcare students and practicing clinicians before and after IPE training interventions. Specifically, this 20-item, self-report tool measures participants' skills in communication, collaboration, roles and responsibilities, collaborative patient-family-centered approach, conflict management/resolution, and team functioning.  Using a retrospective pre-post approach, participants complete the tool after IPE training, but rate their abilities twice: once as they recall them prior to training, and again now that training is done. The results can allow IPE intervention programs to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, as well as help individuals to reflect on how training impacts their teamwork competencies. The validity study revealed high internal consistency and a single explanatory factor underlying all six domains.

2. Interprofessional Education Reflection Worksheet. Ofstad W et al. California Interprofessional Education Research Academy. Rev 011217

Students are asked to reflect on interprofessional opportunities during their first year of medical school.  Students may pick one specific interprofessional activity to highlight or consider the IPE activities collectively when completing the worksheet. (Specific IPE activities include HSC I Journal Club, HSC II Answering Clinical Questions, or the HSC II assignment specific to Health Systems Experience C: “Other Community Resource--Social Determinant of Health Organization”)

This tool was presented at the 2017 CAB VI Conference (Ofstad, Noureddine, Hagge, & Brady, 2017).
