TOPIC: Diagnostic and Screening Tests Studies

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
AT THE END OF THE LECTURE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- Describe structure of studies evaluating diagnostic tests
- List 3 steps of appraising a diagnostic testing study
- Evaluate validity of a diagnostic testing study
- Evaluate the accuracy of a diagnostic test
- Calculate sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of a test
- Describe difference between ruling in and ruling out disease
- Describe how the prevalence of a disease affects a test’s accuracy
- Describe how serial and parallel testing affects accuracy
- Distinguish between screening and diagnostic testing
- Describe the benefits and risks of screening tests
