ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Practice questions for Dr. Baughman’s lecture are available in AIMS under Resources folder à Statistics Practice Questions folder.
  • Optional Literature Review help session will be held on October 11th at 12 pm in room F-118.
  • Optional Peer Writing Tutoring Session - October 12th from 12-1 pm in the Regula Training room. See the Learning Center AIMS site for more information.

  • Turn in first two assessments via your drop box in the EBM I AIMS site.
  • Tertiary Resources Assignment is due at 5 pm on September 25th.
  • Literature Review Assignment is due at 5 pm on October 16th.

 TOPIC: Introduction to Research Methods / Epidemiology and Descriptive Statistics

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

AT THE END OF THE LECTURE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Define and distinguish different study design approaches used in clinical research
  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of different study design approaches
  • Distinguish between descriptive and inferential statistics
  • List 2 common sampling methods
  • Identify data as nominal, ordinal, or interval level
  • Describe the normal distribution
  • Calculate the mean, median, and mode
  • Describe 2 measures of variability

TOPIC: Epidemiology and Descriptive Statistics Activity

  • Calculate and interpret prevalence, incidence, and mortality
  • Define 2 measures of population impact
  • Calculate and interpret relative risk, odds ratios, absolute risk, number needed to treat
  • Distinguish between reliability and validity
  • Describe 3 types of internal and external validity
